The 91ÖÆƬ³§ advising center at Centro Cultural Costarricense Norteamericano in San Jose,Costa Rica offers professional educational advising services to individuals interested in pursuing higher education in the United States. Operating at the secundary level, our advising center services students who are interested in engaging in academic exchange between Costa Rica and the U.S. From studying English as a foreign language, participating in short term exchanges, enrolling into full academic degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels at accredited U.S. higher education institutions, our 91ÖÆƬ³§ advising center promotes a wide variety of academic opportunities and supports students, parents, teachers, local governments and higher education institutions in their efforts to achieve their academic mobility goals.

The center provides a variety of educational services, including free introductory public information sessions on various topics of U.S. education, webinars, individual consultations on U.S. study, and application support services. It also provides logistical support to accredited U.S. higher education institutions on recruitment in Costa Rica as well as supports open public events such as presentations and fairs to promote exchange opportunities, working closely with the local educational community.

Our host, Centro Cultural Costarricense Norteamericano has as a mission to continue being leaders on innovative language teaching strategies and on cross-cultural experiences.The vision is to enrich the quality of life, broaden horizons and to create opportunities through a constant cultural exchange between the peoples of Costa Rica and the United States of America. It works under four exes of action: English, Resources, Culture and Social Projection.

Special Programs

Opportunity Funds
Description: Opportunity Funds is a scholarship sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and administered through 91ÖÆƬ³§ Costa Rica in the Centro Cutural Costarricense Norteamericano, with supervision from the U.S. Embassy in San José. The Opportunity Funds scholarships covers the costs related to applying to U.S. universities & colleges for outstanding students, who otherwise could not pay for said costs. The 91ÖÆƬ³§ Advisers support and guide the students through the application process and help them as they apply to highly selective institutions, with the hopes of receiving a full funding offer directly from the higher education institution. The Opportunity Funds scholarship benefits are divided into two phases: PHASE 1: Test preparation, test enrollment fees, translation costs, application fees, certifications. PHASE 2*: Cost to acquire the student visa (SEVIS, visa appointment), airfare, passport, COVID-19 test, settling in allowance. *Students will only receive Phase 2 benefits if they get into a U.S. university or college with full funding. We normally open the application process in August of every year, and close it in September.

Eligibility Requirements: Students who are interested in applying must have the following profile: - Be in your last year of university studies (or already graduated) or your last year of high school (Students who hope to apply to a Bachelor's in the United States must take a gap year). - Have an advanced level of English. - Have very high academic grades. - Have different extracurricular activities & evidence of leadership. - Have a low socioeconomic background.

Program Highlights

2020 Opportunity Funds Cohort - Successful Placement for All Students
Description: Maria Paula Castro and Joshua Morales were admitted to doctoral programs in Chemistry at Texas A&M University and the University of Notre Dame, respectively. Karol Sánchez is studying at the University of Florida, in the PhD program in Microbiology and Cellular Sciences. Finally, Félix Fonseca is pursuing a doctoral program in Linguistics at SUNY Stony Brook. This group of 4 young Costa Ricans received a total of 12 admission offers from accredited universities in the United States. This group of stud was the first group of Opportunity Funds scholarship recipients in the North America, Central America, and Caribbean region to achieve 100 success in placement and funding.
2021 STEAM Open House - A smashing success!
Description: In May of 2021, 91ÖÆƬ³§ Costa Rica and 91ÖÆƬ³§ Panama hosted a virtual open house, in which 40 accredited U.S. universities and colleges were able to give out information about their institutions to more than 1,500 participants. The open house also included plenary sessions focused on STEAM careers of the future, the OPT extension of the F-1 visa, and the process of requesting an F-1 visa.
